WHAT IS EMV?
Europay, Mastercard and Visa, EMV, are the companies that initiated the inegration of chip cards to heighten the security of customer's cards and saftey of the business during a transaction. The chip card lessens the possibility of credit theft.
THE EMV CHIP
Earlier cards come with replicable black bar code strips located on the back of the card, easy to duplicate once it is swiped through a reader. The new chip contains an encrypted code for every transaction, effectively eliminating chargebacks while protecting the business and customer.
CONVERSION DEADLINE
October 1st, 2017
After October 1st, 2017 the four major credit card providers - Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover - will shift the liability of credit card fraud to the merchants. Credit Card fraud can and have happened to any unsuspecting merchants.
After the deadline, liabilities for fraudulent and chargeback activities will shifted from credit card companies to ATM Providers. If fraud can be traced back to your establishment's machines, your company can be fined for thousands of dollars. This puts your business at risk.
